AIG Seeks More US Funds As Firm Faces Record Loss

American Insurance Group, the insurance giant that is 80-percent owned by the US government, is in discussions with the government to secure additional funds so it can keep operating after next Monday, when it will report the largest loss in U.S. corporate history, CNBC has learned. said the loss will be near $60 billion due to writedowns on a variety of assets including commercial real estate.

That massive loss is likely to spur downgrades in its insurance and credit ratings that will force AIG to raise collateral that it doesn't have.

In addition, if AIG's book value falls below a certain level, as it seems certain to do, it will trigger default in certain of its debt instruments, say people familiar with the situation.

All of this adds up to a huge headache for the Federal Reserve and Treasury, which have already provided over $150 billion of assistance to AIG.

Talks between the government and AIG are focussed on how the company can swap some of the debt held by the government for equity in AIG.

The problem is that the government's ownership stake cannot exceed its current 79.9 percent, leaving officials to try and find a creative way to transfer value to the US in exchange for AIG reducing its debt so that it can then borrow more from the government to meet its collateral calls.

AIG has borrowed roughly $40 billion from a $60 billion credit facility provided it by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. If it can find a way to pay that down by swapping equity, it hopes to take it back up to a level that will allow it to meet its collateral and capital calls.

AIG's board is scheduled to meet this Sunday night in hopes of hammering out an agreement with the government. But in case it can't, AIG's lawyers at Weill Gotschal are preparing for the possibility of bankruptcy.

That seems unlikely, but last November, the government took control of many of AIG's credit default swaps and so a bankruptcy of the holding company might not pose the systemic risk it once did.

AIG said in a statement it had not yet reported results and would provide an update when it does so in the near future.

"We continue to work with the U.S. government to evaluate potential new alternatives for addressing AIG's financial challenges," AIG said. U.S. Treasury officials declined to comment.

A lot of people after brought a GPS, 100% believe on it, this is not correct. first of all the map might be outdated, even thought it’s new version it can’t guarantee 100% correct (let’s say place that can’t turn left but GPS don’t contain the record and ask you left) , the physical driving have to follow the practical condition. please see the picture, due to the GPS map information wrong, many car is stuck after enter, therefore the local have to setup a plate “Do Not Follow SAT NAV”. another picture, advice everybody follow the physical road sign and condition while driving, don’t always look at the GPS.

The next time you are stopped by persons who claimed they are plain clothes police, you are under no obligation to answer their questions or follow their orders, lawyers’ told Malaysiakini today.

‘Policeman who is not wearing his uniform does not have the authority to stop anyone,’ lawyer and human rights activist Sivarasa Rasiah said.

Sivarasa was commenting on the alleged gang-rape of an 18-year-old university student by four men claiming to be police officers on New Year’s Eve.

The girl said that her car was stopped in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur and were asked by the men to open the car bonnet. She was then told that she had committed an offence and ordered to follow the men to a police station. The girl was driven in her car along the North-South expressway to the Tapah-Cameron Highlands road before she was raped in an oil palm estate. This incident and many others, have sparked confusion over the procedures which motorists must follow when flagged down by the police.

The most common problem is that most people take instructions without determining if the other person is really a cop,’ lawyer Annie Santiago said.

However, if you are stopped by a uniformed policeman, then you are required to stop. But you need not get out of the car because you are not expected to do so, Santiago said. He other rule to follow is to provide your identity card only when you are asked to do so. ‘Even then, you should get his ID first to confirm if he is a cop. There is no harm in calling the relevant police station to verify if he is supposed to be on duty that day,’ Sivarasa said.

Both lawyers said that motorists should never follow an officer to the police station unless one is under arrest. ‘If you are not sure, and your instincts tell you that something is wrong, then drive off to the nearest police station and lodge a report,’ Sivarasa said.

In response to the alleged gang-rape of the 18-year-old, Women’s Aid Organization executive-secretary Ivy Josiah called on the police to launch an education program to teach the public about their rights to prevent them from being victimized by bogus police officers.

Procedures to follow in the event you are stopped by uniformed police Officers while driving:

1. Stop the car and wind down your window.
2. If the police officers ask for your documents, request to see their IDs first.
3. If you are satisfied about their identity, ask them if you are being summoned, and for what offense.
4. Produce your identity card and driver’s license and wait to collect your summon ticket.

In the event that the police officers ask you to follow them to the police station:

1. Ask if you are under arrest and for what offense.
2. If you are not under arrest, you have the right to leave.

In the event you are flagged down by persons you believe could be plain clothes police:

1. Do not stop because plain clothes police officers do not have the authority to stop you.
2. Drive to the nearest police station and lodge a report. (The same procedure applies to pedestrians)

In the event the police come to your house:

1. Do not let them in before checking their IDs.
2. If you are not satisfied, phone the nearest police station and confirm if they had been sent to your house.
3. You are under no obligation to allow them into the house if they don’t have a search warrant.
4. Do not go with them if you are not under arrest.

In the event persons who claimed to be plain clothes police who come to your house:

1. Do not let him in because they do not have the authority to do so.
2. Lodge a report at the nearest police station.

My take on this:

That's the current layoff that has occurred in the US alone.

More information on the layoffs since November fro the companies. Apparently the largest layoffs came from Citigroup, one of the largest banking organization. US is already in a recession since December 2007, and if this continues on until second quarter 2009, it will be one of the longest recession period since the Great Depression. The other economies officially in recession currently: Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Britain.

I don't know about you, but to say Malaysia is 'shielded' (as mentioned by some ministers) from the impact and hiccups of the current world situation is undermining and being delusional to say the least.

Next year will be an 'interesting' year, especially for banking/insurance/retail and real estate in Malaysia. For the opportunists, it is a great time to do some smart investing (buy low prices, wait, and sell high) and let 'time' does its magic, although most will be very conservative. As cliche as it sounds, Warren Buffett's "Be brave when others are fearful, and be fearful when others are brave" holds a true ring. Coupled that with a bit of intelligence, patience and logical (not emotional) investing, I believe the strategy will bear its fruits when the market is up again.

This story reveals the nature of the sub-prime mortgage crisis. When
people have high hopes for huge future returns, they lower their guard about the potential risks. This pretty girl thought that the HKD65,000 LV bag was going to come home on Monday, and so she lowered her guard.
Therefore, she believed that her investment in the ONS
(one night stand) was worth it even though it was based upon huge and highly uncertain risks.

Investment companies are great with packaging high return (but high
risk) deals. The Chinese stock speculators are like this pretty woman.
As such, they deserve to lose money. Without people like these, how are people going to make money from the stock market?

As for the media and the stock analysts, they often play the role of
the LV salesperson.

The crisis has left food bound for Bangkok stranded in a number of airports across the globe. A shipment of 1,000 live Canadian lobsters was stuck at the Hong Kong airport and eventually flown back to Canada, according to Nuntiya Hameunggull, general manager of Gourmet One, a food distributor that ordered the crustaceans.

I. Dress Code:

1) You are advised to come to work dressed according to your salary.

2) If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we will assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a raise.

3) If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise.

4) If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

II. Sick Days:
We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

III. Personal Days:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturdays & Sundays.

IV. Bereavement Leave:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend the funeral arrangements in your place. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early.


V. Bathroom Breaks:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet. There is now a strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open, and a picture will be taken. After your second offense, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board under the 'Chronic Offenders' category. Anyone caught smiling in the picture will be sectioned under the company's mental health policy.


VI. Lunch Break: (Love this one)

* Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch, as they need to eat more, so that they can look healthy.

* Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.

He said, 'It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you. 'The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. 'I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.

'One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't havea plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however. He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing momentof his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful --in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him! When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives. Jim just tried to hide in the back.

'My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,' said the CEO. It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb.
He said he was in a hurry, as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.
I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him.
I saw him looking at his watch, and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.
I inquired as to her health; he told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are'?
He smiled as he patted my hand and said, ''She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'
I had to hold back tears as he left. I had goose bumps on my arms and thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life'.

True love is neither physical nor romantic.

True love is acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one that comes along that has an important message.

You smile and thank your dentist. After all, it was your first time to have a tooth pulled.

Credibility is a virtue hard to keep, as can be measured from the conduct of the CEOs of USA's Big Three automakers.

November 18, nine days away from Thanksgiving, they flew from Detroit to Washington D.C. to tell the Congress that the auto industry is running out of cash and it needs US$25 billion in taxpayer money to avoid bankruptcy.

Their pleas got drowned as their lifestyle came under spotlight scrutiny.

Talking about jet-setting in style, not even First Class is good enough for the three CEOs -- Rick Wagoner of GM, Alan Mulally of Ford, and Robert Nardelli of Chrysler -- ranked in terms of size of assets and market share. All three flew in corporate jets to DC.

Wagoner flew in GM's US$36 million luxury aircraft, and he boldly told the members of Congress that his company is burning through cash, and US$10-12 billion of the US$25 billion rescue money should go to GM alone.

According to media reports, Wagoner's private jet trip to Washington cost his ailing company an estimated US$20,000 round-trip. In comparison, seats on Northwest Airlines flight 2364 from Detroit to Washington were going online for US$288 coach and US$837 first class.

Number of the Big Three, Ford CEO Mulally, his corporate jet is a perk included for both he and his wife as part of his employment contract along with a US$28 million salary last year. Mulally actually lives in Seattle, not Detroit. So the company jet has to take him home and back on weekends.

Mulaly told the Congree that he had cut expenses, laid-off 51,000 workers in the past three years, and closed 17 plants.

But Ford continues to operate a fleet of eight private jets for its executives.

Kena hammered, GM quickly decided to return two of its leased private jets, something that jettisons the saying, 'wings clipped'.

However, the CEOs have reasons to fly in private jets. It's to "ensure their security for insurance reasons, and to save valuable time" in travels.

Chili BBQ Cola Wings

Looking for a different twist to your wings? Well this is different, but if you love the flavor of chili, you might want to give this a try.
Cola is the base of this barbecue sauce and the sweetness of the soda enhances the flavors. You can substitue diet soda, but it will change the flavor.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SAUCE:

2 cups Cola (Coke Pepsi etc.)
2 cups ketchup
1 cup vinegar (white)
1 1/2 tablespoons onion powder (or 1/2 large onion finely chopped)
1 1/2 tablespoons black pepper
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons salt
3 tablespoons chili powder (less for not as strong)

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook slowly for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Stir occasionally.

Marinate uncooked wings for 1 hour prior to grilling. Use extra sauce to baste while grilling.

According to a group of defectors, prison camps in North Korea include 300,000 people and each year authorities performmass executions of disobedient prisoners. In addition, An Myong-Chul, 40, who is a former prisoner camp guard, said thattorture and sexual violence often take place at the camps.

An Myong-Chul fled to South Korea ten years ago. He said that every year, North Korean authorities execute 20 inmates at each prisoner camp. His voice was heard by those who gathered at a ceremony to set a team, which would be called theCampaign for North Korean Freedom. An is the head of the campaign that is supported by 120 defectors and activists from South Korea, who hope to release political prisoners held in prison camps of the communist state.

According to the estimations of Freedom House, an American watchdog, in 2007 about 200,000 prisoners were registered in the camps. An stated that the report presented by Freedom House was based on old data. He outlined that the number of prisoners significantly increased over the last months and now there are over 300,000 inmates, which shows a "growing political instability" in North Korea. An mentioned that the information he currently possesses was obtained from other defectors.

"As a guard, I was trained to kill all the inmates in an emergency. (Apart from those executed) they are subjected to forced labor until their death," he said.

The one-year-old stray dog was hit by driver Marco Menozzi, who confessed he did not even stop when he clashed with the pooch.

But Mr Menozzi hit the dog at such speed that it became embedded in the grille under the bonnet of his car.

It lay trapped in the Peugeot 207 and managed to cling on until the car eventually stopped 15 miles further on.

Miraculously, the pup survived the ordeal, escaping with just a broken leg and bruising.

It is now in a police kennel looking for a new owner.

A police spokesman said: "He's a very lucky boy. He was saved because he was hit so hard.

"Any softer and he would have bounced off the car and been crushed under the wheels."

Mr Menozzi had been driving at 70mph on a side road in Cozze, southern Italy.

Conclusion : If you choose to contribute 8%, you will end up paying more income tax to the government, which will make the government richer. Finance Minister Najib said this measure is meant to boost up the slow-down market, but from this example wee see that the money does not go into the market. Instead the money goes direct into the government's pocket through the greater amount of income tax that we will have to pay. Obviously this measure does not help the market at all. Do we still want this kind of government that doesn't have the best interest of the people in mind?

Malaysia considers dumping petrol subsidy scheme

Malaysia is not currently subsiding petrol and may dump its subsidy scheme altogether, despite major protests earlier this year over spiralling pump prices, a minister said Tuesday.

The government on Tuesday cut pump prices by seven percent to 2.00 ringgit (0.56 dollars) per litre as global crude prices continued to ease. The price of diesel was also reduced by 15 sen to 1.90 ringgit per litre.

"We have stopped subsidising petrol from the time when the pump prices were cut to 2.00 ringgit per litre," Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Samad told AFP.

He said that at current prices, the government is making about 30 sen per litre.

"At about 60 dollars per barrel we are already making money," he said.

Shahrir said the government was still handing out direct subsidies in the form of cash rebates for motorists of 625 ringgit per year and that diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were still being subsidised.

"The rebate system is still being enforced... but it will runs its course until March next year before we either stop it or implement a new system," he said.

Tuesday's cut was the fifth the government has announced since a 41 percent hike in June as the price of crude soared, sparking angry street protests and calls for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign.

Shahrir said the government will decide by the end of the month if subsidies will be reinstated if crude oil prices go up again. It will consider setting a floor price of 1.92 ringgit per litre.

"I would be happy to have a floor price of 1.92 ringgit. This would allow the government to earn some revenue and it is also easier to manage the price," he said.

"It is also a better option because we can use the savings for development or to reduce the deficit."

The government earlier this month announced a 7.0 billion ringgit (2.0 billion dollar) stimulus programme -- reaped from savings on reduced oil subsidies -- to boost the economy amid the global slowdown.

But the additional spending saw the government widen its budget deficit forecast for 2009 to 4.8 percent, from 3.6 percent predicted in August.

Laid off sysadmin arrested for threatening company's servers

A systems administrator was arrested in New Jersey Monday for allegedly trying to extort money and even good job references out of a New York-based mutual fund company that had just laid him off.

Viktor Savtyrev, of Old Bridge, N.J., was arrested at his home Monday morning. He faces two charges under the federal cyber extortion statue. Savtyrev, also known as Victor Savturev, had an initial hearing in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J. Monday afternoon and is scheduled for a bail hearing on Thursday morning, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Kosto.

Savtyrev was employed as a systems administrator for an unnamed mutual fund company in New York City until he was let go, along with nine other employees, on Nov. 5. All of the laid off workers were given a severance package, according to a criminal complaint filed with the courts.

"This is important, especially at this time of layoffs and financial difficulties, because we're making it clear that people can't take their frustrations out on companies and employers," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Erez Liebermann. "This arrest should also send a message to other companies that extra vigilance is important right now."

Late in the morning of Thursday, Nov. 6, Savtyrev allegedly used a Gmail account to e-mail the company's general counsel and three other employees, saying he was "not satisfied with the terms" of his severance, according to FBI Special Agent Gerald Cotellesse in the complaint. Savtyrev allegedly threatened to cause extensive damage to the company's computer servers if they would not increase his severance pay, extend his medical coverage and provide "excellent" job references.
The system administrator also threatened to alert the media after attacking the server.
According to the complaint, the company contacted law enforcement personnel the day of Savtyrev's first alleged threat. That evening, at the direction of investigators, a company employee recorded a phone call in which Savtyrev allegedly repeated his demands. During the call, he also allegedly said he would get his "comrades from Belarus" to help him hack into the company's servers.
Savtyrev allegedly sent a second e-mail to the company on Friday, Nov. 7, and in a taped phone conversation that evening agreed to show company officials how he would exploit the systems in return for meeting his demands, the complaint said.
The criminal complaint notes that he sent a third e-mail on Saturday saying he had opened several back doors in the company's system and it would take them months to find them.
Liebermann noted that with a rocky economy and increased layoffs, companies need to shore up their defenses by shutting down internal and remote access immediately upon terminating a worker, monitoring system logs for any anomalies, adding extra layers of security and having a plan in place to quickly report any threats or breaches to law enforcement.
"And it's important that they report instances like this before they go from a threat to a loss of data," he added.

5 tech companies that could use a bailout

If the government ever decides to rescue the tech industry, Sun, Nortel, Motorola, Yahoo and Sprint would top the list

Now that the government has pledged $700 billion to bail out the financial banking industry and is considering lending $25 billion to help the auto industry avoid bankruptcy, many tech companies may be wondering where to get their hands on government bailout cash. While tech companies may not have the same level of clout among Washington policy makers as AIG or General Motors, some of the industry's biggest players have been hit hard times in recent months and could certainly use a health infusion of cash to help them right their ships. Here's our take on the five biggest tech companies that are most in need of a helping government bail out.

Bailout Candidate #1: Yahoo

The numbers: Yahoo recently said that it would lay off "at least" 10% of its global workforce before year-end; third-quarter 2008 revenue only increased 1% over third-quarter 2007 revenue; third-quarter 2008 net income of $54 million was just over one-third the size of its third-quarter 2007 net income of $151 million; share price has declined by more than 60% over the past year, currently stands at around $10.75 per share.
What's gone wrong: Look back to the heady days of last February, when Yahoo was confidently rejecting Microsoft's bid to purchase the company for $44.6 billion. Apparently, Yahoo was pushing for Microsoft to increase its offer to $56 billion, which would have translated to a value of about $40 per share. What a difference nine months makes: Yahoo's share price is now hovering in the $10 range and its proposed arrangement to share advertising revenues with search rival Google was scuttled on fears that the U.S. Department of Justice would block the deal from going through.

The turnaround strategy: At the moment, Yahoo is clearly rethinking its decision to reject Microsoft's bid from earlier in the year. Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang recently acknowledged at a Web 2.0 conference that "the best thing for Microsoft to do is buy Yahoo" and that he would be willing to sell the company "at the right price whatever that price is." Unfortunately for Yahoo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently indicated that his company has "moved on" and that no deal was currently in the works.

Bailout candidate #2: Sun Microsystems

The numbers: Sun announced plans last week to cut 18% of its global workforce, or as many as 6,000 of its employees. In its most recent earnings report, the company posted a $1.7 billion loss in the first quarter of 2009, down from its net income of $89 million in the first quarter of 2007; its share price has declined by more than 80% over the past year and currently stands at around $16.50 per share.
What's gone wrong: Sun insists that its troubles are primarily the fault of poor economic conditions and are not the result of losing business to competitors such as IBM. Specifically, Sun says that the collapse of major Wall Street firms over the past three months have wiped out some of its biggest customers. However, the company has missed analyst expectations for three consecutive quarters and some analysts have pointed to the company's struggles with its servers and server virtualization segments as particular trouble spots.
The turnaround strategy: Sun's recent round of layoffs are a part of its broader reorganization plan, which includes creating an Application Platform Software division that will focus on technology such as its MySQL database and its GlassFish application server. The company has also been rumored to be a major candidate to be bought out, with Fujitsu and HP said to be the most interested parties.

Bailout candidate #3: Motorola

The numbers: Motorola posted a $397 million loss in the third quarter of 2008, with the biggest losses coming from a mobile-devices segment that reported an operating loss of $840 million for the that quarter, more than three times the $248 million loss it reported in the third quarter of 2007. The company has also announced plans to cut another 3,000 jobs, with the vast majority coming from its cell phone segment; its share price has declined by more than 75% over the past year and currently stands at under $4 per share.

What's gone wrong: In the two-plus years since Motorola scored a major success with its Razr series – which until recently was still the best-selling handset model in the United States – the company has been left behind by high-profile 3G devices such as Apple's iPhone, Samsung's Instinct, Research in Motion's BlackBerry Storm and HTC's G1. The company, which trails Nokia and Samsung for the largest market share of the global handset market, has even been rumored to be willing to spin off its handset division, despite forming the largest segment of its total wireless business.
The turnaround strategy: Starting next year, Motorola will be concentrating on producing handset models that run on either Windows Mobile or Google Android. Motorola co-CEO and handset division chief Sanjay Jha said recently that concentrating on two mobile operating systems will cut production costs and improve the customer experience. Previously, Motorola had offered devices based on several platforms including its own Motorola OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian and the Linux-based MOTOMAGX.

Bailout candidate #4: Nortel

The numbers: Nortel lost an astonishing $3.41 billion during the third quarter of 2008, which was way down from the $27 million net income that it generated in the third quarter of 2007. The company also expects to lay off 1,300 employees; its share price on the New York Stock Exchange has declined by more than 95% over the past year and currently stands at less than $1 per share.
What's gone wrong: A lot of things. Nortel is primarily being hurt by the current economic recession and by declining demand for its equipment from telecom service providers. Additionally, some have speculated that some of Nortel's major 3G build-outs have stalled due to frozen credit markets. Since Nortel is a Canadian company, it will have to get that government to pony up.

The turnaround strategy: Nortel's first order of business seems to be selling off its Metro Ethernet unit, which the company has said is being crowded out of its market by tough competition. If the company is successful in its bid to sell off its Metro Ethernet assets, it will have more money freed up to its carrier and enterprise networks units. Nortel plans on undergoing a major restructuring early next year by giving each of its units more control and autonomy, which the company says will create more accountability for each unit. The company is also looking to invest more in applications services and in adopting a more software-driven business model.

Bailout candidate #5: Sprint

The numbers: Sprint posted a net loss of $326 million for the third quarter of 2008 and has endured net losses totaling nearly $1.2 billion for the year; since the third quarter of 2007, Sprint has shed a total of 3.5 million customers, and the company's wireless segment has lost $645 million so far in 2008. Sprint's stock price has dropped by more than 86% over the past year and currently stands at just above $2 per share.

What's gone wrong: For the past couple of years, Sprint has faced myriad problems, from continued
difficulties in integrating former Nextel users into the Sprint network to challenges in delivering quality customer service to a shrinking subscriber base. The result has been a steady drop in both net earnings and customers for the carrier, which is now the third-largest in the United States with just more than 50 million wireless subscribers.
The turnaround strategy: Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, who took over the company late last year, has made improving customer service his top priority, and has also been working to make some improvements in Sprint's voice and data network quality.
Earlier this year, Sprint won an award from consumer ratings group J.D. Power for having the highest wireless call quality in the southwestern United States, and J.D. Power President Steve Goodall said that Sprint had shown quality improvements in five of the six major regions throughout the United States. The company is hoping that spinning off its WiMAX division into Clearwire's $14.5 billion mobile broadband venture will free up more resources that it can put into marketing and in network upgrades.
